Hard winter hurts race numbers

ADRIAN – The snowy, cold winter cut runner numbers as the Owyhee Off-Road Challenge took to the hills outside of Adrian on Saturday.
“People just could not get outside and train like in years past,” said race organizer Nickie Shira. “Our numbers are down a bit from last year.”
Shira said the lack of open roads during January and February also forced a change in plans for some runners.
“We had people that had requested to run the 10K route call in and change to 5K,” she said. “People just kept telling me they were not ready because of no training time due to roads and snow.”
Even with fewer people taking to the hills in support of a new track at Adrian High School, the weather turned out to be perfect for a day up and out of Adrian. As the start signal was given, brightly adorned runners took off from Two Rivers Community Park and led by Oregon State Police, ran down the highway until the turn into the surrounding hills.
With the half marathon group gaining 1,740 feet in elevation, the runners made their way up the initial hill overseeing the Snake River.
As runners crossed the finish line, Shira and others were already busy planning next year’s event.
“I am pleased with the great weather we had today and we are looking forward to more runners next year,” Shira said.
