Hawk Fire nearly contained

JORDAN VALLEY — The Hawk fire 15 miles northwest of here is now 80 percent contained this morning, and crews are mopping up what remains of the blaze, according to the Bureau of Land Management. The Bureau expects the blaze to be fully contained by noon today.
Earlier reports stated that Hawk had burned over 3,000 acres, but current estimates put that number at 1,413.
“When a fire is burning actively it is hard to measure,” Al Crouch a Bureau fire specialist said, when the fire is under control, more accurate mapping can be conducted. “We can take time to literally walk, drive or fly across the area.”
No structures have been destroyed, though many acres of grazing land and Sage Grouse habitat have been lost.
Weather conditions made the Hawk blaze unpredictable, but ultimately a joint attack from a local Rangeland Protection Association and Bureau resources were able to get the situation under control, Crouch said.
“This incident was truly a coordinated effort. An aggressive ground attack from BLM and RFPA firefighters supported by multiple aircraft from around the Region minimized the acreage burned,” he said.
