Malheur County celebrates Memorial Day

Across the county, groups will be holding ceremonies for the upcoming Memorial Day.

Nyssa will begin the weekend on Friday, placing flags on all veterans’ graves starting at 9 a.m. at the Hilltop Memorial Cemetery.

The Memorial Day celebration will take place Monday starting at 11 a.m. Following that, all are invited to the Snake River dock where a memorial will be held for those in the naval services along with a wreath release into the water by the Nyssa American Legion Post 0079.

The Nyssa post in now under the command of George Lincoln.

The Vale Memorial Day celebration will also be held on Monday starting at 11 a.m. at the Valley View Cemetery.

Members of the American Legion Post 96 will officiate.

For those wanting a trip out of town, the 76th annual Malheur City Cemetery potluck and decoration will be held Sunday at the “convention center” in Malheur City. The lunch will start at 1 p.m.

Family, friends and those interested in the history of the town and surrounding area are invited.

Since an official designation in 1971, the last Monday of May is observed as Memorial Day, a day honoring the men and women who died in the U.S. military.
