In the first year of adding David Bates to the name of the annual Vale golf tournament, organizer Tom Snook finally had to cap the number of teams wanting to play.

Bates, avid golfer and Vale resident, died in a collision in January on his way to work.

“People just kept calling and wanting to play,” Snook said.

On Saturday, 20 teams gathered at Country View Gold Club for a day of golf under perfect conditions, a luncheon, and to spend time at a place Bates loved.

His former golfing partner, Steve Marshall, picked up a team and the Bates family was present throughout the day.

The benefit raises money for both the Vale football and golf programs. Beginning this year, an academic scholarship will be added with the money raised per the wishes of Jessica Bates.

Final numbers of the amount raised are unavailable as donations continue to arrive.

At the end of play, the crowd gathered at the putting green for a playoff as two teams in the mixed division tied with scores of 65.

As putts came up short or slid to the side of the cup, Bobbi Buttice found the center of the cup to give second place to the Buttice/Maag team.

“We gave away over $3,000 in prizes consisting of gift certificates and donations from a number of businesses and golf courses,” Snook said. “We also had some very generous donations as hole sponsors. Even the lunch was donated by Y-1 Farms (Doug and Terrie Maag) and Logan’s Market. Kevin Arrien donated $500 and the Beckly/Stone family gave $750. Standage Produce also donated $250. We are greatly appreciative of everyone who had a part in this tournament and to all the staff at Country View for all their help.”

Mixed results: 1. Logan’s Market, 61 (Logan Hamilton, Pattie Hamilton, Sage Ceniga, Jeff Wagner). 2. Buttice/Maag, 65 (Dennis Buttice, Bobbi Buttice, Doug Maag, Terrie Maag).

Men’s results: 1. Shira/Stone, 58 (Eric Stone, Colby Shira, Nate Kauffman, Joe Standage).

Senior results: Old Duffers, 60 (Bob Meyers, Dennis Cornwell, Clayton Hiatt, Oscar Martinez).
