Obituaries – December 27

Myrtle Smith Gardner Hiatt
Feb. 2, 1931 – Dec. 21, 2017
Mother, I know what love is, it is because of you.
Myrtle Smith Gardner Hiatt was born Feb. 2, 1931, in Nampa, Idaho to her parents Edna Smith Gardner of Pleasant Grove, Utah and father Dellosse Albert Gardner of Wallsburg, Utah. She lived in Kuna, Idaho until she was 10, when her family moved to Vale, Oregon to farm. She remembered that day clearly: Dec. 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor Day.
She met her eternal companion Neil in high school and after his mission to the Southern States, they were married in the Salt Lake City LDS temple on May 26, 1953. They were married for 65 years and had seven children. Through many wonderful years their blessings and joy increased as they saw the births of their 28 grandchildren, and 30 great grandchildren, with two more expected this coming year.
Myrtle is survived by her husband and seven children: Craig Hiatt (Karen Webb), Ryan Hiatt (Radene Stone), Cindy (Scott Haueter), Sue (Stan Pierce), Janeille (Ric Bennett), Julie (Trent Bodily), and Kristen (Rob Nieskens); her sister Mary Felts; and sisters-in-law Avis Taylor and Carol Hiatt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jack, and sisters Vivan Hobbs, Ada Owens, Margaret Wilson, Mickey (Roberta) Real, and great-grandsons Scotty Hiatt, and Neil Penberthy.
Myrtle lived a Christ-like life of charity, selflessness, love, and kindness. Her life and love touched many. Her wonderful example of charity and wisdom is a legacy that she has passed on to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
