To Our Readers: New page dives into archives, explores past

If there’s anything local folks like more than high school sports, it’s probably Malheur County history. That’s been clear in the past year as we reviewed our feature offerings and tested new formats. One feature in particular, Way Back When, has an avid following and should we miss one week of it, the howls of protest have been loud and clear.

We want readers to know that we hear you. That’s why we pledge not just to continue that presentation of history but to add to it. Starting this week, we are adding a monthly history page – a full page of news straight out of our archives. We see it as sort of a Way Back When on steroids, featuring briefs, news and even a few classified drawn from a specific time.

This week’s page is on Page 6 and offers a trip back to September 1926, when county residents were grappling with some familiar issues: drought, pasture, school enrollment, transportation challenges and more.

The page will be back each second issue of the month, focusing on a different year in the historic Enterprise files. On the week this page runs, the shorter Way Back When column will take a break but never fear, it will return the following issue.

We hope you will continue this dive into the history of Malheur County through our archives. We think they are a treasure, and one we gladly share. – SC
