VALE – “I don’t have any books at home.”

Vale Elementary School librarian Patty Faw has heard this time and again from students.

In the age of electronics and cell phones, many children simply wish to wake up Christmas morning with the gift of a book wrapped and ready to open. Unfortunately, for many, that Christmas wish may not happen.

Faw is determined to change that. She and others in the community are working to make a book a reality for each child wanting one. The Children’s Book Drive is collecting books for Christmas morning.

“I am on the Treasure Valley Community College library board and this is something they have been doing for three years,” said Faw. “They serve small school district libraries and unfortunately, Vale is not considered small. I asked if I could start up a program in Vale and they said sure.”

Receiving help from the TVCC library board on ideas and places to buy books inexpensively, Faw started the local book drive this year.

“People are bringing in books and we are preparing them for delivery,” Faw said.

The group is collecting new and like-new books for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Drop-off locations in Vale are Miracle Eatery, Logan’s Market, U.S. Bank, Malheur Drug and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management office.

For those short on time, staff of the Vale Elementary Library can choose a book to buy and donate.

Contributors can send a check to the Vale Elementary School in care of the library.

Books need to be collected by Dec. 1. For more information, contact Faw at 541-473-3291.
