Viking girls top Parma in softball

The Enterprise

The Vale Viking softball team split a pair of games last week, falling to a state-champion Homedale squad but defeating Parma in a home contest two days later.

The March 17 Parma game ended at 8-7. Winning pitcher Amanda Trenkel pitched the complete game, with seven runs, five hits, five strikeouts and six walks.

Coach Kelly Johnson said the team got clutch hits when it needed them and didn’t commit any errors.

The result was better than against Homedale two days earlier, when the Vikings fell 3-17.

In that game, Kelsey Hawley held the mound 3 and a third innings, with Isabel Lastiri coming in at relief.

Johnson noted Homedale is expected to repeat this year as Idaho’s defending state champion. It was a tough game for an opener, he said, and nerves played a role in the loss.

The team will gear up to meet Homedale again on March 30, this time at home.
