Viks double up in Boardman

BOARDMAN — Solid pitching and key hits from an array of players combined to propel the Vale High School baseball team to a sweep of Riverside in a doubleheader last Friday.

Vale won the first game 14-3 and claimed a 12-2 decision in the second contest.

Gage Fortin proved to be a reliable asset for the Vikings in the first game from the mound, giving up three runs on three hits, but also striking out five batters and keeping Riverside from gaining momentum.

“Gage was very good on the day, keeping Riverside off balance most of the day,” Vale baseball coach Rick Yraguen said.

Meanwhile, the Vikings racked up 12 hits for the game. Trace Cummings, Tanner Hamilton and Cody Towers all finished the first game with two hits, while Carson Brown finished with three hits. Fortin, Dillon Kaschmitter and Cade Perry each had a hit.

Cody Towers stood on the mound for the Vikings in the second game and once again Vale put in a strong performance at bat, piling up 11 hits. Perry, for example, finished the second game with four hits.
