ONTARIO – The 43 Yorkies, Scottish terriers and other dogs currently at the Ani-Care Animal Shelter south of Ontario are legally ready to be adopted by new owners.
Kimberly L. Anderson of Weiser, the dogs’ owner, agreed in court to surrender the dogs. She also pleaded not guilty to 37 counts of cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor.
Police seized the dogs after they went to Anderson’s home to check on the condition of her husband. Police said in an affidavit that the dogs lived in unhealthy conditions.
They were turned over to Ani-Care for safekeeping.
“We now have legal possession of the dogs,” said Kim Hanson, an Ani-Care director. “We are currently setting up appointments to have them spayed or neutered and then they are ready to go.”
Hanson said the dogs won’t be released to new owners until a visit to the veterinarian’s office for spaying or neutering. Hanson said they have no timing yet for those procedures.
Delbert Walker, the Washington County prosecutor handling the case, verified the dogs are now legally in the care of Ani-Care.
“We are waiting for the order signed by the judge, but in court, Ms. Anderson did legally give up the dogs to the Ani-Care facility,” said a representative in Walker’s office.
On Monday, Ani-Care started sifting through applications.
To those interested in adopting, there is still time to apply.
An online application is at ani-care.com or stop by the facility at 3616 Highway 201. The non-refundable application fee is $50. The adoption itself is $100.
“With the interest in these dogs, we know some people will be disappointed when they don’t receive one,” Hanson said. “We are hoping people take a look at the other dogs we have available for adoption and take one home.”

CORRECTION: Ani-Care charges a $50 application fee for those wanting to adopt. There is an additional $100 adoption fee. An earlier version of this story misstated the fee.
